Owning a website is one thing, but being able to update content or add new pages, without fuss, is a feature most businesses require on a daily basis.
Sadly, most of the businesses we talk to do not have the ability to simply update their own website. For example, add news stories and articles, update the office opening hours or create a section which describes a new product or service they are offering. Many also feel unhappy with having to wait for changes that appear simple to make and turn out to be rather costly.

One tried and tested way modern websites are updated and maintained, particularly for small to medium sized businesses, is via a Content Management System (CMS). A CMS is like using Microsoft Word or Google Docs to edit and save changes to your website. It only enables authorised users to log in and update your company home page or news blog.
At Assemblysoft we focus our efforts on providing awesome tools for small to medium sized customers who don't know how to edit their current web applications.

Rather than recommend a bloated solution for your website needs, such as WordPress that comes with bells and whistles you will probably never need, consumes much of your time trying to get to grips with it and will most definitely take much longer than it should to load, we focus on enabling a fast and easy to manage solution which focuses on structuring content and editing it in the most intuitive way possible.
We can help add Content Management (CMS) functionality into your existing website. We can also create a new website for you with a CMS built in. Not only will you be able to manage all of your own images, text and layout, just as you would with Word or Google Docs but the site will run lightning fast.
We can also help to improve your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) so your content is seen by Google Search.
What simple content management should let you do
Before comparing products or platforms, it is worth writing down what you actually need from content management. For most of the businesses we work with, the list is refreshingly short:
- Make everyday changes yourself, the same day you think of them: opening hours, prices, team members, news.
- Add new pages and articles with images and formatting, without being able to accidentally break the design of the site.
- Keep the site fast. Editing convenience should never cost you the loading speed your visitors and Google both care about.
- Keep search engines happy. Titles, descriptions and clean web addresses should be part of editing a page, not a technical afterthought.
Everything beyond that list needs to earn its place, because every extra feature is something to learn, patch and pay for. This is also where content management and search engine optimisation meet: a site that is easy to update is a site that actually gets updated, and fresh, well-structured content is one of the most dependable ways to be found. The engine matters far less than the habit it makes possible.
One more item we encourage clients to add to the list: ownership. However the editing works, the words and images are your business asset, and you should be able to take them with you if you ever change platform or supplier. It is a principle we hold ourselves to in writing, in our data ownership and portability statement, and it is worth asking any provider where they stand on it.
Content management in 2026
Updated August 2026. The options have multiplied since we wrote this. Headless CMS platforms — where the content lives in one system and your website simply pulls it in — are now a mainstream choice, and it has also become entirely practical to run a lightweight editing engine that you own outright, built into your site with no third-party platform to license, patch or fight with. This very blog runs on one.
The advice, though, has not changed: choose the simplest thing that lets the right people edit the right content. Most small and medium businesses still need an easy editor, fast pages and good SEO — not a sprawling platform with features nobody uses. Whether that means a headless CMS, a lightweight owned engine or simply adding editing capability to your existing site depends on your situation, and it is exactly the kind of decision we can help you make quickly.
