Internal Systems Handover

Your team is moving on. Your systems don't have to suffer.

Managed support and a structured handover for business-critical systems when in-house developers leave, when the team is stretched across too many priorities, or when a system was built in a technology nobody left in the building understands. We take the operational load, document what was in people's heads, and keep the systems moving until you decide whether to bring them back in-house, keep them with us, or modernise.

Typically 4–8 weeks to full handover Everything documented Reversible: bring it back in-house later
Common triggers

Four situations that start a handover

A key developer is leaving

Notice has been given. Years of context about how the system really works are about to walk out of the door, and the documentation does not cover it.

The team is stretched

Your in-house developers cannot maintain the legacy estate and deliver the new roadmap. Something has to give, and it is usually the maintenance.

A skills gap

A system built in .NET Framework, WCF, classic ASP, or an older front end that the current team does not know and does not want to learn.

Cost and risk reduction

Keeping specialist knowledge in one salaried head is expensive and fragile. A named external team with documentation is often cheaper and always more resilient.

Need extra hands rather than a handover?

If your team is staying but needs capacity, our software development outsourcing service embeds .NET engineers alongside them without moving ownership. A handover is for when the knowledge itself is leaving.

What we provide

Everything the departing developer used to do, written down

Bug fixes with SLA-backed response

Agreed response and resolution targets by severity, with root causes fixed rather than patched around.

Feature development & enhancements

The roadmap does not stop because a person left. Enhancements delivered in sprints with weekly staging releases and code review on every change.

Security patching & framework updates

Dependency scanning on every build, patches through the pipeline, and framework upgrades planned rather than postponed.

Infrastructure, hosting & DR

Azure or on-premise: environments as code, backups stored independently and restore-tested, and a disaster recovery runbook with agreed RTO and RPO.

Performance optimisation

Bottlenecks found with Application Insights and fixed at the source, whether that is a query, a cache, or a hosting tier.

Documentation & knowledge capture

Architecture maps, runbooks, and decision records, so the next handover, in either direction, is a formality rather than a crisis.

How it works

Three phases, typically four to eight weeks

If the departing developer is still available, phase one is a conversation. If not, it starts from the code, and we know how to do that too.

1
1 to 4 weeks

Knowledge transfer

Architecture review, repository and environment access, technical debt assessment, and recorded sessions capturing the business context and the undocumented workarounds.

Deliverable: architecture map, risk register, handover plan
2
2 to 4 weeks

Parallel running

We handle support alongside your existing team while standing up monitoring, writing runbooks, improving the CI/CD pipeline, and agreeing the SLA and escalation paths.

Deliverable: runbooks, dashboards, agreed SLA
3
Ongoing

Full handover

We take complete operational ownership with a dedicated named team, monthly reporting, and quarterly reviews. Your developers are free to focus on what is next.

Deliverable: supported system, monthly service report
Your dedicated team

Replacing one person with a resilient team

Lead engineer

Primary technical authority and owner of the system after handover.

.NET engineer

Day-to-day development, fixes, and the stability work that keeps the backlog small.

DevOps engineer

Infrastructure, pipelines, deployments, backups, and monitoring.

Delivery manager

Your point of contact for reporting, priorities, and the quarterly review.

  Bringing it back in-house later

Because everything we do is documented and runs through pipelines you own, reverse knowledge transfer to a new hire is straightforward. Some clients use us as a bridge for a year; others keep us on. Either is fine, and the Client Playbook guarantees there is no lock-in.

Trust & Compliance

Due diligence, already answered

Handing a live system to a new partner means trusting them with source code, credentials, and data. We make that easy to verify: our policies, certifications, and evidence are published openly in our Trust Centre, and the commercial terms we work to are set out in our Client Playbook.

Trust Centre

Our complete policy set, certifications including Cyber Essentials, insurance, and company information in one place.

Hosting & Data Residency

Where your data lives while we support the system, and how UK residency is maintained when your obligations require it.

Engagements are governed by our Master Services Agreement, with a UK GDPR Article 28 Data Processing Agreement wherever personal data is involved. We are happy to sign a mutual NDA before any access is granted. Common due-diligence questions, answered →

Frequently asked questions

Internal handovers, answered

The developer has already left. Can you still take it on?

Yes. We reverse-engineer the system from source code, configuration, and production behaviour, using AI-augmented analysis that senior engineers verify. It takes a little longer than a handover with the person in the room, but it is a routine starting point for us.

Do you support older technology stacks?

Yes. .NET Framework, classic ASP.NET and Web Forms, WCF, VB.NET, SQL Server, and older front ends are covered by our legacy application support. We also support Node.js, Python, and PHP systems where they sit alongside a Microsoft estate.

How long does a handover take?

Typically four to eight weeks from first access to full ownership, depending on the number of systems and how much documentation exists. Where notice periods are short we compress phase one and extend parallel running.

Can you modernise the system as part of support?

Gradually, yes. Once stable and documented, improvements are planned into the quarterly roadmap: framework upgrades, pipeline improvements, and, where justified, platform migration or cloud modernisation by the same team.

Can we bring support back in-house later?

Yes. Documented processes, runbooks, and pipelines you own make reverse knowledge transfer to a new hire straightforward. There is no lock-in and no penalty for doing so.

How is this different from standard managed support?

It includes a structured transition specifically designed for inherited internal systems: knowledge capture from departing staff, parallel running with your team, and documentation written for a future in-house owner. After handover it becomes standard managed application support.

What does it cost?

The handover phases are billed at our published day rates, and the ongoing support is a monthly plan sized to the SLA tier and estate. You get a written proposal before anything is committed.

Your team is moving on. Your systems don't have to suffer.

Tell us who is leaving, when, and what they look after. If there is still time to run knowledge transfer with them, we will make the most of it. If not, we know how to start from the code.
